Rural Manawatu Arts Trail

Introduction

Welcome to the inaugural Manawatu Arts Guide. A number of prominent and highly respected New Zealand artists have elected to make Manawatu their home. A walk around the towns of Manawatu will reveal public art in prominent places. Mr Dibble's 'Pacific Monarch', featured on the front of this brochure, being just one of the substantial number of works on view.

Contemporary Maori artists such as Bob Jahnke, Shane Cotton, and Kura Te Waru Rewiri reside in Manawatu. They have all contributed to Te Putahi a Toi, a centre of excellence for Maori visual arts at Massey University. Already a new generation of artist is building upon their work with Saffron Te Ratana and Ngatai Taepa gaining attention for their work.

There is also a solid tradition or ceramic art in Manawatu. Denise Tohiariki, Steve Schofield, Trevor Wright and Arnold Davies are some who continue in the stead of John Fuller, Stan Jenkins and George Newton-Broad.

Collections of New Zealand art can be viewed by the public at both Te Manawa Art (art gallery) and the Massey University campuses. Dealer galleries offer a range of work representative of local artists for visitors to Manawatu to purchase, take home and continue to enjoy long after their visit to our region.
