Exhibiting Visual Arts

Exhibiting Visual Arts

Te Manawa's art gallery is not the only place art works are exhibited! Other venues include cafes, empty shops, office walls, the City Library, community halls, Square Edge, private dealer galleries, and of course the MOSAIC and Tuia websites!

If you want to exhibit and sell your work, here are some pointers to get you started:

  • Set a date early and work to it! - this way you will be motivated and committed. Dealer galleries in particular are often booked up to a year ahead so already have long lead in dates.
  • It can be beneficial to prepare a body of work along a similar style or theme, as it can provide a focal point for your exhibition.
  • Art work will need to be completed and ready for hanging - this means framed for most paintings, although this is not always necessary for a stretched canvas or painting on solid surfaces such as wood.
  • Consider exhibiting with another artist whose work compliments your own.
  • Make sure that people how to make a purchase. Be prepared with the means to take payment, give change and receipts, and mark pieces as sold. Either put the prices on the title card or in a printed catalogue.
  • Generally pick up is made on the conclusion of the exhibition so that that the exhibition remains complete and other potential buyers are encouraged to make similar purchases.
