Having shown precisely zero talent at art in his youth, Paul unaccountably started painting watercolours at the age of forty. During the quarter-century that followed, his art improved – slowly, slowly. In recent years, he has had a number of solo exhibitions, been exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Art, been Guest Artist at the Art Expo in Palmerston North. About a year ago he adopted a minimalist approach, ditching all his expensive paintbrushes and scores of tubes of paint. Now, with an old credit card, he paints watercolours with a maximum of four colours, and they have developed a greater vibrancy and presence than ever before.
