Michele Theobald & Rachael Smith | Urban Fabric

Michele and Rachael regularly get together to support each other’s creative practice, often with a glass of wine. They have been discussing emotions, art and collaboration for some time. This is their first exhibition together. These works are a combination of photos and paintings from local street scenes, each with their own interpretation of the surroundings and individual emotional environment. Utilising an observational mode, the resulting body of work is an investigation into emotion. What is seen, what people want to show and methods of protection of environment and of self. Michele predominantly works in acrylic and charcoal. Her works incorporate people, or the suggestion of people going about everyday life. Integral to this work is the current feeling of facelessness and the ability to hide emotions behind a mask. Michele’s studio is on level 1 of the Square Edge building and she can be contacted at theos25@xtra.co.nz for any enquiries or commission requests. Rachael is a photographer with a master’s degree in fine art. She believes in the materiality of the printed image. Rachael creates images of the beauty found in the everyday and sees making images as an escape. A means of disengaging and reengaging with the world around her. Rachael’s studio is on level 1 of the Square Edge building and she can be contacted at rachael@raheracreative.co.nz for any enquiries or commission requests.
