For all representational artwork, learning the basics of drawing is the best place to start. Graphite pencil is the basis for most drawing classes. Whether it is learning to draw realistically or in cartoon form, the focus is on accurate line work and shading. Some classes expand to using coloured pencils, ink pen and other drawing materials.

The advantage of attending live classes over self learning via the internet, is the student has an experienced artist able to give timely feedback on the students technique and can recommend how to improve with specific drawing exercises.
